ST. LOUIS (KMOX)–St. Louis County Council approved a resolution Tuesday night pulling $5 million from emergency funds to prevent future cyber attacks.
"What greater emergency do we have right now then a vulnerable IT system," said Councilman Ernie Trakas who introduced the resolution.
Last month, hackers hit a system used by the courts and the police halting everyday operations.
"We're facing a serious problem right now that's going to take, if we had the money today, 10 months to correct," said Trakas. County "IT" professionals, along with outside help, will work to transfer data from physical servers to cloud based ones during the next 10 months.
The biggest expense will be the purchase of a special cybersecurity software upgrade from Microsoft for $2.65 million.
