HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) - A dog was shot and killed by a police officer after it lunged at and bit the officer Wednesday night in Hazelwood.

The Hazelwood Police Department says an officer responded to a call about a barking dog in the 1400 block of Annilo in the north the St. Louis County neighborhood.

"While the Officer was making contact with the owner of the dog, the dog overpowered its owner lunging at the Officer biting him causing several puncture wounds to the Officer's arm," police stated in a Facebook post. "The Officer discharged his firearm striking the dog."

Police say the dog died and the officer was transported to the hospital for treatment.
