BRENTWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) - An animal shelter in St. Louis County is in need of help from the community as they're accepting nearly a dozen dogs and puppies from Louisiana who were displaced due to Hurricane Ida.

The Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA) is expecting the arrival of the pets on Wednesday afternoon and says their shelter is already very full. If you're available to help, they're asking people to apply on their fostering page, here.

"We simply couldn’t say no when asked to help. We need you to say “yes” too. We are in need of foster volunteers, particularly those willing to care for dogs over 40 pounds," stated APA on Facebook.

The APA, located at 1705 S. Hanley Road, deployed a team to pick up pets in Oklahoma and bring them to St. Louis.

“The APA Adoption Center is proud to partner with BISSELL Pet Foundation on this lifesaving mission to help pets impacted by Hurricane Ida," Sarah Javier, APA President and CEO. "Our hearts go out to all those in Louisiana who are experiencing the devastation of the hurricane, particularly those in the animal welfare community. We are grateful that we are in a position to help.”

This isn't the only want the greater St. louis area is helping victims of Hurricane Ida. The Missouri National Guards sent 300 troops, Ameren Missouri sent more than 300 employees to the area devastated by the catastrophic weather.

More than 1 million homes and businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi — including all of New Orleans — were left without power as Ida, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland.
