Developer The Staenberg Group is busy, building in the Metro East, and just about done with the tear-down of the old Chesterfield Mall.
"We're reusing all of the concrete, the asphalt," President Michael Staenberg tells KMOX's Michael Calhoun. "One of the things I'm most proud of is that we've recycled 95 percent of the demolition. Nobody in America does this."
All of the piled up rubble, he says, should be gone in about a month, buried as material to level and grade the site.
Staenberg says they're still signing tenants for the massive Downtown Chesterfield project that will replace the old mall. The only buildings still standing are the Dillards and former Famous-Barr stores.
Meantime, in Glen Carbon, 25 pieces of art are being installed at the Staenberg development called Orchard Town Center.
"I think art evokes emotion and allows the citizens to become involved. We're trying to show people that you can do better by art," he tells us. "People ask me what my favorite art is and it's like 'what's your favorite kid?'"
One question we get a lot at KMOX: when is Meijer opening?
The Michigan-based superstore competitor to Walmart and Target isn't expected to be ready in Glen Carbon until at least 2027, possibly 2028. Another Meijer location is also planned in O'Fallon, IL.
"They're excited about coming. They feel St. Louis is an opportunity for them to develop their brand," Staenberg says.
He adds Dicks Sporting Goods is already open at Orchard Town Center.
But he doesn't expect Meijer to be a part of Downtown Chesterfield.
"We're looking for more of a boutique grocery store" for there, Staenberg says. "Somewhere between 15 and 30 thousand feet. Something like the Trader Joe's of the world, the Straub's, something a little different."
