EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) - One of the largest cities in the Metro East is coming down hard on violators of their face mask mandate. The city passed an ordinance to fine businesses and people who are caught not following the public health order.

The city council passed the ordinance, with a unanimous 7-0 vote, that will allow police to issue fines of up to $500.

The mandate requires face masks while on public transportation, picking up food from a drive-through or carryout restaurant, visiting a health care provider, shopping or working at retail businesses and more.

People will face a first-offense fine of $25, then it goes up to $250 for a fourth offense. Businesses face a first-offense fine of $50, going up to a maximum of $500 for subsequent offenses.

Nearby Franklin County, Mo. also recently passed a fine system for those not wearing face masks.
