Five years ago, the EPA said it would clean up the radioactive West Lake Landfill. Now, they’ve announced that that digging will begin in spring of 2024.

Dawn Chapman, a member of the neighborhood group Just Moms, tells KMOX that not everyone is happy with that timeline.

“I think there’s a lot of animosity right now for how long it took,” Chapman said. “And the fact that the investigation came after the decision. They think ‘well, you should’ve investigated the site first.’”

Chapman said some people are also concerned that the EPA is only talking about removing nuclear waste down to 20 feet deep, raising fears about possible radioactive groundwater runoff to the Missouri River, where the county gets much of its drinking water.

The EPA announced its plans to clean up West Lake in 2018. Since then, they’ve been doing drilling samples at the site to map out where the radioactive waste is — and how much there is.
