ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - After Black Friday it's Small Business Saturday, a push to get holiday shoppers to consider local options.

KMOX spoke with some business mentors about what those local shops will need to do to survive through the holidays and beyond.

They say one of the keys for small business will be to reassure their customers.

"That we're using the best approaches caring for our customers, whether it's a retail operation or a restaurant, that you're going to feel comfortable here with the COVID situation, that we're stable," explains Richard Goldberg. Golderg serves as a mentor at SCORE St. Louis, a volunteer-led non-profit offering guidance to small businesses and budding entrepreneurs.

President Pam Gilbert says small businesses also need to reach customers early.

That means reaching them online, "getting out there and finding news ways to market to your customer base and keeping them engaged with you and that's really going to be the trick."

Goldberg says many of his clients are seeing opportunities in the current economic climate and looking to expand.  He says he's also been contacted by people who have suffered layoffs during the economimc crisis and are looking to strike out on their own.
