Temperatures could be around the freezing mark Sunday night as 22,500 fans pack CityPark for the expansion franchise's first playoff game. A freeze warning has been issued for the region that begins at 10 p.m. and ends 12 hours later. Sunday night's Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. but could be closer to 9:30.
City takes on rival Sporting KC in the first match of a best-of-three series. The teams met three times during City's inaugural season, with City prevailing twice and Sporting KC once. The most recent match was a 4-1 victory for City SC at CityPark Sept. 30.
City SC won 17 of its 34 matches with five draws during its first year Major League Soccer, the most wins by an expansion team in MLS history. Sporting KC finished the season in 8th place in the Western Conference with 44 points, 12 behind top-seeded City.
Prior to Sunday night's match, which will air for TV on FS1 and on KMOX radio and Y98, there are festivities to keep fans warm. There's a block party at 5:30 outside the stadium and a kickoff concert by country artist Chris Bandi at 6 p.m. The gates open at 7:30 and a pet-friendly watch party begins at 9 p.m. at Lou Fusz Plaza.
