FERGUSON, MISSOURI (KMOX) - Tuesdays will be special in Ferguson, starting this week. Police Chief Troy Doyle announces "Temp Tag Tuesdays" when his officers will focus on enforcement against drivers with expired temporary license tags. In a message to the Ferguson community, the Chief says, "It's not about generating revenue for the city, it's about safety & compliance. Our aim is to keep our roads safe together! Let's do it right, folks!" #TrafficEducation #TempTagTuesday

Chief Doyle admits the enforcement is a tough call, and could be a hardship on those who are cited. The message notes some drivers, "May struggle to pay the fine as they couldn't pay for the original tags." But he says it's unfair to those law-abiding citizens who do the right thing and pay their license fees, in accordance with state laws.

Expired temporary tags have become widespread in the St. Louis region, seen by many as a sign of everything from lawlessness to poverty. By having the enforcement focus on just one day a week, the hope could be those with expired tags could find it more inconvenient to just pay the license fee than to risk a fine one day each week. Temp Tag Tuesday will be an interesting experiment in enforcement for the new Police Chief in Ferguson.
