ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - At least two major food delivery apps have been charging customers within the city of St. Louis an extra fee. The companies say it's due to a law enacted last year that was meant to help restaurants amid the pandemic.
The St. Louis Business Journal found that Uber Eats and DoorDash both charge an extra $1 on every delivery in St. Louis. It's called the "St. Louis Fee" on DoorDash.
"St. Louis has temporarily capped the fees that we may charge local restaurants," the app states. "To continue to offer you convenient delivery while ensuring that Dashers are active and earning, you will now see a charge added to St. Louis orders."
The fee they say is because of Ordinance 71193, approved in July of last year, which limits fees that third-party delivery services can charge local restaurants at 20% and mandates the portion of tips that the driver will eventually receive.
Alderwoman Christine Ingrassia sponsored the bill last year, saying it's about "trying to help (restaurants) stay afloat during the pandemic."
According to a CNN report, St. Louis isn't the only city where this is happening. Similar charges from $1 - $2 are also set up in cities like Chicago, Cleveland, Denver and others.
