Former Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice reacts to high court leak

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - "A lot of us who have been watching this issue have never thought it was permanent, even though people who go to be confirmed as Supreme Court justices say it's settled-law."

That's what former Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Wolff said Tuesday on KMOX's "St. Louis Talks" show, reacting to the leaked draft of a U.S. Supreme Court justice's opinion that could eventually mean Roe versus Wade gets overturned.

Wolff called Justice Samuel Alito's draft opinion "very direct" - and he doesn't expect much tweaking to take place before it's filed, "It's going to go around to other justices, and some of the ones who agree with the writer might say to change this or that, but it's a strident opinion... I think that people (outsiders) reacting to it may be hoping they'll withdraw and do something else. I don't see that happening."

Wolff also shared with KMOX listeners what he finds fascinating about the timing of the leak of the draft opinion, "Prior to this decision, if it comes out this way, legislators around the country could say they're pro-life and vote for something, knowing the courts will strike it out. Now, they have to own their vote. The voters will now know when somebody promises something, the court's not going to bail them out by saying, okay sure."
