ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A former Parkway student is in custody following the Parkway School District being made aware of a "potential safety concern in the area" surrounding Parkway South High School Monday morning.

Parkway School District officials tell KMOX News the campus was on lockdown for a time, with students and staff remaining inside the building but continued on with normal teaching, learning and school day activities.

Due to the proximity of Parkway South High School to other schools in the district, the district said they took extra precautions at Southwest Middle, Wren Hollow, Hanna Woods and Sorrento Springs to keep students indoors.

"We understand that any potential safety concern can be unsettling. Please know that we are limited in terms of what we can share due to privacy and safety concerns in cooperation with law enforcement," said the district in a statement. "We thank everyone who did an outstanding job taking this situation seriously, acting swiftly and according to our procedures, and keeping learning and schedules for students as normal as possible during this time."

"The safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority. Thank you for being so understanding and trusting in us to keep our schools and community safe."

Officials are not discussing the nature of the threat.
