ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The last 24 hours have been a hectic time for kids and parents after a shots-fired incident at a Kirkwood school event Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday afternoon, shots were fired into the air in the middle of a trunk-or-treat event at North Kirkwood Middle School.
According to Kirkwood Police Department, an individual attending the event was causing a disturbance. The individual displayed a handgun and fired multiple shots into the air, after being confronted by other attendees regarding their behavior.
The individual was tackled by attendees and taken into custody by officers. Thankfully, no one was hurt from the incident.
The incident at North Kirkwood Middle School Sunday, who was hosting the event for Tillman Elementary School, led to class being canceled Monday.
However, parents and kids were invited to come to the school to partake in various activities to help deal with the Sunday-afternoon incident, with counselors on hand.
Among the activities included meeting and petting with a 10-year-old Golden Retriever.
Noah The Comfort Dog is a golden retriever and part of the Timothy Lutheran Church. Noah's job at the school at the school is simple.
"His job is to let kids love on him," said Noah's handler Sue, "He is very good at it."
Sue says that Noah is trained on the level of a service dog. Noah visited the school to help both kids and parents cope with what they saw Sunday afternoon.
Sue says dogs like Noah are the perfect animal to help people deal with trauma.
"Dogs are wonderful, they don't judge, they're excellent listeners, they don't tell secrets" said Sue, "Sometimes just spending a few minutes to pet a dog can help with the grieving process or with the stress, even if its for a few minutes."
Sue says that Noah has done visits to many places across the St. Louis-area to help people around the area cope with traumatic experiences.
"When the shooting that happened last Fall at the center for Performing Arts, we were able to visit with police officers that had responded and give them comfort and support to them," said Sue.
School officials say that it is possible that class at Tillman Elementary could resume Tuesday, but officials say they are open to delaying the return if needed.
