ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - An uptick in COVID cases in younger people is being seen in St. Louis City – mirroring national trends

St. Louis City acting health director Dr. Fred Echols says residents between the ages of 20 and 39 continue to be the primary driver of COVID cases in the City. But there has been an uptick in cases among youth.

Comparing the past couple weeks to the entire pandemic, Dr. Echols says the portion of cases for young people under age 20 has more than doubled from 10% to 22% of all cases.

Experts say the UK variant – which is now the dominant strain in the United States – appears to affect kids more.

Dr. Echols says the increase could also be due to older people getting vaccinated while children are not yet eligible.

The CDC is pointing to the re-start of sports and other youth activities for the growing cases among school-aged children.
