ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Friday night lights could be returning to St. Louis City schools soon.
Under the the City of St. Louis plan, schools must submit sport-by-sport plans for infectious disease control and testing of athletes to the city's health department in order to be allow to hold games.
St. Louis County Executive Sam Page acknowledged that plan in his Monday morning briefing.
"I'd love to see Friday night football games, underneath Friday night lights," Page acknowledged. "But we're not there yet."
Page says he's working with the community on "a path forward", and that includes an "aggressive" testing program. But, he realizes not all schools that have football teams and other high-contact sports have the resources to implement a program like that.
Page announced relaxed guidelines for youth sports last week that allows for competitive games to be played for all sports and kids under the age of 14. High-impact sports like football and wrestling remain barred from competitive games for high school-aged children.
As for St. Louis City, many schools already postponed football to the spring. It's unclear how many schools will shift back to fall football.
One school that seems poised to: Saint Louis University High. SLUH President Alan Carruthers posted this update Sunday.
