St. Louis has an election coming up this week, and with new voting laws in place, some local organizations are making sure people know how to vote.

The primary election for President of the Board of Alderman takes place this Tuesday to replace Lewis Reed, who stepped down after a federal fraud indictment. Running to replace him for the remaining five months of his term are St. Louis Aldermen Megan Green and Jack Coatar.

Reverend Darryl Gray of Missouri Faith Voices joined KMOX to talk about how voting will work Tuesday. Since Missouri's photo ID law recently went into effect, the organization has been setting up places around the state where people can get photo ID.

"We're not going to reach everybody that we need to reach, we're talking about over 200,000 people who are eligible to vote in the state who do not have photo ID right now," Reverend Gray said. "And we've got to get to those people."

The NAACP is challenging the new Missouri law, as many opponenets see it as a way of suppressing marginalized people's votes.

For Tuesday's election, people who do not have photo ID can still vote, but they'll have to cast a provisional ballot. That just means more work goes into verifiying the voter's identity.
