I-55 in south St. Louis County closed for hours after fatal shooting, crash

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A major highway in south St. Louis County has been closed for hours after a shooting a fatal crash early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 3 a.m. on Interstate-55 near Interstate-270. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and another victim was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound, according to Fox 2. That person's condition was not reportedly known.

Police found two men injured in a taxi that had been rear-ended on the interstate and say both men had been shot. A truck driver allegedly witnessed the crash and said the taxi was stopped on the highway when it was hit by another vehicle.

The truck driver said when he went to check on the occupants of the taxi the driver told him he had been shot and asked for help.

The southbound lanes of I-55 near the incident have been closed since 3:45 a.m. but is expected to reopen around 8:30 a.m. The ramps from I-270 east and I-255 west to southbound I-55 are both closed as well and expected to be cleared around the same time.

There's also major traffic on the northbound lanes of I-55 due to another crash this morning.
