Visitors of Jefferson Barracks Park can now call a loved one who has passed.
The Wind Phone installation features a hanging rotary phone and invites people to speak with loved ones they have lost.
The concept was originally created by a Japanese Gardner in 2010 after the artist lost his cousin.
However, Saint Louis Artist Kathryn McKay installed the piece last fall. "I also suffer from my own grief and have always been looking for ways to sort of assuage it or work through it," McKay tells KMOX's Jade Aubrey. McKay is referring to the loss of her mother in 2020.
The installation is located on a path in the park that overlooks the Mississippi River behind the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater.
"And the phone itself is not a pay phone it is what I would call a kitchen phone - it's a rotary phone that hangs on the wall. I wanted it to feel like you were at home a little bit. So you could talk on this rotary phone like you would talk to your friends in the kitchen so it has a more homey feel."
