ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Cori Bush continues to face backlash regarding her comments on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
In a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Congresswoman Bush posted a tweet on Oct. 29 saying, “We can’t be silent about Israel’s ethnic cleansing campaign."
Those comments have faced a growing amount of backlash from critics saying it fans the flames of Anti-Semitism.
"Obviously, the Jewish people were the victims of one of the largest ethnic cleansing in history and it wasn't even 100 years ago," said Jewish Federation President Brian Herstig on Total Information A.M. "It's part of the reason why Israel was founded. It's a fear a lot of Jews still hold and carry with them."
Herstig and the Jewish Federation have been one of the biggest critics to Bush, with the Federation, along plenty of other local Jewish leaders co-signing a scathing letter calling out Bush for her comments.
"Her statement not only fails to advance peace, but its incites anger and the potential of further violence toward the Jewish Community," the letter read.
The letter also went on to call Bush's comments as misleading, saying that her public statements "directly contradict what she has told (the Federation) in private."
"She's certainly not carrying through publicly what she's been saying privately," Herstig told Total Information A.M.
Bush has called the allegations 'unfair' and says she understands how her Jewish constituents feel. Her defenders have pointed to her co-sponsoring a resolution calling for Hamas to release hostages as a sign that she supports Israel.
Herstig, however, calls her actions as doing the bare minimum and says she has a responsibility to do more.
"When your constituency is living in fear and having genuine concerns in the language you use that help fan the flames of potential Anti-Semitism, there's a responsibility there too," said Herstig.
Herstig said that Bush needs to stop posting stories that come from Hamas, apologize and to sit down with Jewish leaders to have a public conversation about her comments.
