A Cole County Judge has ruled that Josh Hawley's office violated the Sunshine Law when he was attorney general by concealing government communications — off government servers — in order to prevent damage to his Senate campaign.
Judge Jon Beetem ruled that Hawley was actively running for U.S. Senate at the time of the requests which were submitted by a national party committee supporting his opponent.
Beetem goes on to say, "the requested documents showed, at a minimum, a questionable use of government resources, demonstrated by the fact that their eventual public release helped trigger an investigation by the Secretary of State's office into potential misuse of government funds."
The office has been ordered to pay $12,000 in civil penalties plus attorney fees.
