The St. Louis City Counselor's office has alleged that thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles has "caused a public safety crisis."

City Counselor Sheena Hamilton has sent a letter to both car manufacturers and given them 30 days to correct the problem that makes their cars easy to steal.

Public Safety Director Dan Isom said that from August 1-13, St. Louis Police received 356 reports of theft or attempted theft of Kias and Hyundais.

"This figure reports nearly a 77% of the total vehicles that have been stolen in that time frame," Isom said. "So the majority of the vehicles being stolen now are Kia and Hyundai vehicles."

He said addressing the thefts and subsequent crimes that often follow is consuming police resources and endangering the public.
