KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) — Improving COVID transmission numbers in St. Louis County cause the Kirkwood School District to make a change.

In a meeting Monday night that got emotional at times, the school board voted to allow middle and high school students to return to the classroom for a full day, four days a week.

Since November, Kirkwood middle and high school students have had the option of in-person learning, but would be dismissed at lunch time and have to log-in at home to finish the day. Fridays have been treated as a fully virtual day, and the district tells KMOX that will remain the case under the new plan.

Barrier shields will remain for students eating lunch, while desks are cleaned. Parents can change their student's learning plan until Friday.

The district will continue to monitor COVID transmission and could fall-back to the current plan if numbers spike.
