Jefferson City, Mo. (KMOX) - He's being remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life's work was dedicated to serving the people of the state of Missouri. An overflow crowd gathered Tuesday to witness former governor and U.S. Senator Kit Bond's state funeral inside Jefferson City's capitol rotunda.
Former governor and U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft spoke at the funeral. He said Kit Bond launched many careers among his vast accomplishments, "Kit was a person of both individual and governmental integrity. I have no recollection of any time where Kit failed to live up to his commitments."
Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver spoke about how Senator Bond was not afraid to bridge the gap between party lines, "Kit Bond had a shadow, and that shadow will not disappear, because it's all over Kansas City Missouri. It's well known, and neither of us backed away from it, that we were going to work together. And we did work together."
Former U.S. Senator John Danforth gave the final eulogy inside the capitol rotunda service. In it he said, "Let's make what we do with our own talents a living memorial to Kit Bond. Let's not hoard them or dig holes to hide them."
There will be a celebration of life service for Kit Bond, Thursday afternoon, at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church.
