St. Charles County is moving toward its first set of rules for short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO in unincorporated areas. Under a bill introduced Monday night, operators would have to buy a $200 2-year license, limit guests to two per bedroom, and stay at least 600 feet from any other licensed short-term rental. Parties and events would be banned. Michelle Woods of Habitat for Humanity told the County Council the registration piece alone matters because the county is flying blind on the issue right now.
"This ordinance will help the county provide a clear picture on how many short term rentals exist so we applaud this county's effort for this step."
Properties inside or within a mile of the county's Agricultural Tourism Overlay District (a.k.a. much of wine country) would be exempt. A final vote could come in two weeks.
