ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - A proposal in the Missouri legislature would bring media literacy training into schools.

"We have not prepared our kids to interpret what they're getting," says State Representative Jim Murphy (R-St. Louis Co.). "It's coming at them in so many different ways, it's like a firehouse."

He says young people are inundated with information from broadcasts, cable, social media, videos and other sources.

Murphy says children haven't been given the tools to sort it all out, "this is probably the most important thing we can do for our children, otherwise I don't know where we're going to end up, because today, adults don't understand media."

Murphy's legislation would create a committee to establish media literacy curriculum within Missouri schools. He says that panel should include media experts, lawmakers, educators, parents, mental health experts, experts in the field of media literacy itself.
