The Missouri House has given preliminary approval to a pair of bills to legalize sports betting.
State Representative Phil Christofanelli of St. Charles says the tax rate would be 10%, although some lawmakers wanted it higher.
He contends Missouri must be competitive with neighboring state's tax rates. Christofanelli adds, "there's a vigorous illegal market and if we set the tax rate too high we run the risk of competing with illegal actors."
A final House vote could come Thursday.
