Madison County State's Attorney Tom Haines says the shooting of two women outside the East Alton Ice Arena struck the community like a lightning bolt. Berton Lamar Newton, 30, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Newton is being held on $1 million bond.

Police say just before 8 p.m. Saturday night he approached two women outside the ice rink, he walked away after speaking to them briefly, but about a minute later he walked back over to them. Police say he raised a firearm and shot once, striking both women in their lower bodies.

The women were taken to the hospital and are now recovering at home.

Police say Newton is also linked to a shooting and home invasion incident in the neighboring Cottage Hills, Illinois community on Sunday. License plate recognition cameras helped make the link to Newton.

He was arrested on Monday afternoon in a traffic stop on Berm Highway near Alton. His girlfriend, Amber Dawn Golliday, 33, was in the vehicle and also arrested. She was also charged with multiple felony counts.

Both suspects are in Madison County Jail.
