ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A man was struck and killed by a police car after being involved in a gunfight with St. Louis County Police Department officers in north St. Louis County.
According to Sergeant Tracey Panus of the St. Louis County Police Department, at around 10 a.m. Monday morning, a man, later identified as Durell Dorn, drove into a snow bank at an intersection of Lucas and Hunt Road and West Florissant Avenue. The man would then proceed to get out of his car and fire his gun indiscriminately.
Dorn proceeded to walk down West Florissant Avenue to the intersection of Ferguson Avenue and West Florissant. When St. Louis County police officers arrived on scene, a gunfight would ensue.
Panus says they know at least one officer fired an unspecified number of shots while another officer struck the man with a police car.
"This isn't the first something like that has happened," said Panus. "When someone is firing shots and we are able to use whatever means necessary to stop that action."
"If he is firing shots and he is creating a threat, there is a store (near the scene) and our officers are on scene, we don't want anyone struck. We are going to take whatever means necessary to stop that from happening."
After being hit the police car, Dorn was administered first aid and CPR before being transported to an area hospital, where he would be later pronounced deceased.
Panus says no officers suffered serious injured from the incident and no bystanders were struck.
Panus says an investigation is underway and at the moment, it's unknown if Dorn was struck from a bullet by an officer.
