As many as 150 dogs and puppies are being taken into custody by the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force after they were tipped about a hoarding situation in Christian County, Missouri.
UPDATE: The final tally was 223 animals--211 dogs, 3 cats, 4 kittens, 4 birds, and one rabbit.
The dogs are all Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas and other small, mixed breed dogs. They are filthy, encrusted with feces and tangles. According to the Humane Society, many are malnourished and have a variety of parasites and skin infections.
“These dogs lived in horrific conditions, and had we not intervened, it is clear that they might not have survived,” said HSMO President Kathy Warnick. “We are relieved that through careful negotiations we were able to rescue these animals from such a dangerous and heart-breaking situation. Now that they are safe, community support is critical to ensure these dogs receive the care and treatment they deserve and a new chance for a better life with a loving family.”

The dogs will be available for adoption after they've been given a clean bill of health by the HSMO will make the dogs available for adoption after they have been given a clean bill of health by veterinarians and evaluated by the animal behavior team.
In the meantime, the Humane Society is asking for donations of old towels, blankets and newspapers. Monetary donations are also appreciated. To make room at the shelter, the HSMO is waiving adoption fees for dogs 35 pounds and over.
