Mid America cuts ribbon on airport expansion

Mid America Airport cuts the ribbon on an expanded terminal. The $34 Million project added two new gates, for a total of five, and lots of extra terminal space for passengers.

But is the airport that was once called a runway to nowhere making any money? Is it profitable?  KMOX News asked Airport Director Bryan Johnson, "so as we add travelers, let's say we add 100,000 or 200,000 travelers, that has an impact. That has a positive impact on revenue, because of the amount of parking, the amount of concessions, the amount of ancillary services that are provided, but then it also costs more money to operate, so there really is no set number."

Pressed for details, Johnson says Mid American relies on taxpayer support for its operating expenses, but he says that's not unusual for any airport in Illinois. "Operationally, we rely on the county to help support the airport."

No flights were coming and going the day of the announcement, but a spokesman for the airport says that's because on Tuesday's Allegiant Airlines has no flights there.
