Missouri American seeking big hike in water rates

Customers of Missouri American Water could be seeing a rate increase of about $150 a year

You may be adding water to the price spikes you've seen from inflation. Missouri American Water will be seeking a 25% rate hike this year.

Spokeswoman Christie Barnhart says it's needed as they replace aging cast iron pipes and other infrastructure. She notes the Public Service Commission is considering how much is too much. "Every investment is closely scrutinized by the commission, so for us to do something that wasn't needed for reliable water service, of course we wouldn't be able to recoup that cost."

A final decision on the increase is expected in the early summer. Missouri American estimates the average St. Louis County customer would pay an extra $150 a year.
