Multiple proposals would end the long, and controversial, history of some communities in Missouri banning residents from owning certain dog breeds, like pit bulls. One bill would negate any breed-specific bans or regulations in Missouri.

The proposals from Missouri Republicans, Rep. Kent Haden (Mexico) and Rep. Ron Hicks (Defiance) will allow regulations and laws about dogs, but they can't target a specific breed.

Bans on certain dog breeds has ties to higher insurance prices, racial housing discrimination and a history of media sensationalizing instances of some dog breeds causing harms to humans.

Opponents of the bill say the regulations increase safety in some areas.

On Thursday, members of a Missouri House committee debated the proposal by sharing personal and reported stories of "vividly describing dismemberment and carnage," carried out by certain dog breeds like pit bulls and German Shepherds, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
