Missouri recorded the highest number of hate crimes ever in 2021, the latest year for which statistics are available from the FBI.
Of the 194 reported cases, more than half were racially motivated. The Missouri ACLU says the trend shows the rapidly escalating white supremacist violence seen in Missouri and across the nation.
Kansas City reported the highest number of hate crimes at 39, compared to nine in St. Louis. Experts say the number of hate crimes in the past was likely an undercount because law enforcement agencies didn't have to share that information with the FBI until the 2021 passage of the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act.
The state's previous record was in 1993, when Missouri saw 167 hate crimes. 2021 also saw the highest number of anti-transgender hate crimes ever reported in the state.
