The Cassville School District in Southwest Missouri has brought back corporal punishment, including spanking, as a form of discipline this year.
According to NowThis, the school board approved the policy in June. Spanking is apparently only supposed to be used as a last resort, and then has to be recommended by the school's principal.
NowThis reports that "only certified personnel in the presence of an adult witness can administer spankings," and other students are prohibited from viewing. Educators also cannot hit kids' faces or heads.
The schools in the district have to get written consent from the parents before the polocy takes effect. According to information provided to USA Today, the Superintendent of the district, Merlyn Johnson, said the policy had a lot of community support.
Missouri is one of 19 states that allows corporal punishment.
