JEFFERSON CITY (KMOX) - The number of people who died was greater than the number of births in Missouri last year. It's the first time that's happened in more than a century.
A report from the Department of Health and Senior Services states that just under 74,000 Missourians died last year, an increase of 11,000 from 2019. And just under 60,000 people were born in Missouri.
"It's the first time Missouri had a natural decrease for a complete year in 110 years of vital records centralized data collection," the report states.
The report sites the COVID-19 pandemic as the main cause.
