ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - A downtown St. Louis homeless shelter shut down five years ago as a "nuisance property" may be making a comeback. The New Life Evangelistic Center at 1411 Locust has secured building permits from City Hall.

The Reverend Larry Rice says it would be a daytime shelter--not a place to spend the night.
"What happens is a lot of people are staying in pop-up shelters all over the city," explains Rice, "put out at 6 or 7 in the morning and have nowhere to go. That's a tremendous need that we're going to address at this particular time."
There's already opposition. The Downtown West Neighborhood Improvement Association may file an appeal of the building permit.
Rice says the soonest the day shelter could open would be sometime next year.
