Reinfection matters.

That's the finding of new research from Washington University. Scientists just wrapped up a study looking at the dangers of COVID-19 reinfections.

Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly is a WashU epidemiologist and one of the authors of the study. He said he found that repeat COVID-19 infections contribute significant additional risk of adverse health conditions in multiple organ systems.

"Getting that second infection is not inconsequential," he said. "It will certainly put you at a higher risk of serious outcomes."

He said people who got reinfected had a higher risk of hospitalization as well, and that they were at an increased risk of getting long COVID. He added that people should do their best to avoid reinfections, and recommends masking and getting a booster shot.
