ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Library of Congress is inducting a sound recording from St. Louis into the National Recording Registry. The "St. Louis Tinfoil" was recorded by Thomas Edison on a cylindrical phonograph in 1878.
Computers were later able to read what it sounded like. You can hear it for yourself in the audio at the top of this page.

It's the earliest known musical recording, and also has a man speaking later.
The Missouri History Museum will put the tin foil strip on display starting August 28th in an exhibit about St. Louis sounds. The exhibit will feature 200 artifacts from national stars, local legends, and important venues. You can expect to hear everything from Nelly to the dawn of recorded sound.
