ST LOUIS (KMOX) -- Alfred Montgomery defeated Vernon Betts in the Democratic primary for St. Louis City Sheriff last month. However, despite conceding, Betts says he will not support Montgomery.

Instead, Montgomery's opponent this November, Libertarian Joy Denise Dabney, is who Betts may throw his support behind. He does say he wants to check into her background a bit first before making it official.

Although Betts says he still believes there might've been a chance the election result could've been flipped with a hand recount, he says he was advised it was highly unlikely.

Betts points to many voters in the city picking up Republican ballots to participate in the hotly contested gubernatorial primary as well as a lack of support from progressives as reasons why he lost.

Sheriff Betts says he might stay in politics after his time as sheriff is done. Betts says he is considering running for Alderman, in his ward the 14th.

The 14th Ward's Aldermanic seat is currently held by Rasheen Aldridge. Betts suggested he might run for this seat in part because Aldridge and Montgomery are friends. In response to Betts floating the idea of running for his seat, Aldridge is disappointed to see personal grievances be a part of Bett's motivation.

"If it's about personal issues because I have a relationship with Alfred, that's interesting." Aldridge adds, "that's the worst of politics is when people make it personal and not about what's actually going on."

Aldridge adds he supported Betts when he first ran for Sheriff in 2016.
