Supporters of a measure to ban walking in streets failed to gain the votes to override a veto by St. Louis County Executive Sam Page.

5 votes are needed. It was a 4-2 vote Tuesday.

Councilman Ernie Trakas asked for the override vote.

In May the St. Louis County Council passed the ordinance, prohibiting pedestrians from walking or standing in a street. If no sidewalk is available, people would have to walk or face toward oncoming traffic. The bill introduced by Councilman Ernie Trakas was intended to improve public safety, but opponents argued it was aimed at panhandlers who stand in roadway medians. Two weeks later, County Executive Page struck it down.
