ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Any Missouri and Illinois residents who have a fear of animals can be thankful they don't live in Texas. But they still are in one of the deadlier states in the U.S. when it comes to death by animals.

The nature and adventuring website Outforia wanted to learn which animals in North America are the most dangerous to humans by looking at the number of deaths caused by different animals over the last 20 years.
Texas leads the nation in deadly attacks by animals with 520 deaths and California is a distant second at 299 deaths. Here's the full top-10 list:

Just outside of the top-10 are No. 11 Illinois with 123 deaths and No. 12 Missouri with 119 deaths.
"There are lots of things you can do to avoid an animal attack but knowing whether to stay calm or fight back is key," says editor of Outforia Carl Borg. "My main advice to anyone going on these adventures in places you might come across a wild animal is to be prepared. I would always recommend you research the most prominent animals in the area you are visiting, as different animals mean different protocols when facing an attack. Knowing the difference between a brown and black bear for example could save your life!"
So which animals did they find to be the deadliest in North America? the brown bear and sharks lead the way:

The 10 states with least deaths caused by animals (since 1999) are:
Delaware - 0
North Dakota- 0
Rhode Island - 0
New Hampshire - 10
Vermont - 17
Wyoming - 17
Hawaii - 18
Maine - 20
South Dakota - 22
Alaska - 23
The report didn't include that between 175-200 deaths on average are caused by deer in car crashes, according to Petpedia.com.
