DES PERES, MO (KMOX) - Charges of second-degree murder have been filed against a man the Major Case Squad says killed another man following an altercation Saturday at West County Center in Des Peres.
21-year-old Jason Hill of St. Louis is held on $500,000 bond, and counts include armed criminal action.
The shooting happened in the Champs store on the mall's first floor. The victim is identified as 20-year-old Malachi Maclin of Florissant
It's not known yet what led to the altercation that appeared to spark the shooting, or if the men knew each other. A squad official tells KMOX two weapons have been recovered. Investigators are reviewing video to determine exactly what happened, inlcuding whether the two exchanged gunshots.
Andrew Young was across from Champs when the shooting started. "At first it didn't click as to what was happening," he says. "But, just a split-second later as the shots kept occuring it did."
Young says it sounded like at least a dozen shots were fired.
Freightened shoppers hid in stores and other parts of the mall until police gave the all clear. The mall was closed for several hours.
