KANSAS CITY (KMOX) - The heat we're experiencing across Missouri is no joke. To show just how serious it is, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Kansas City is baking cookies inside a car.
The temperatures in KC are expected to reach 101 with a heat index of 105 – in St. Louis the heat index is predicted to hit 107 on Friday. That's apparently hot enough to bake a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies on your car's dashboard.
NWS began the experiment Friday afternoon and after just a few hours, the balls of cookie dough began to look pretty delicious. The car's internal temperature was up to 140 degrees.
While NWS had everyone's attention, they made sure to educate folks on the dangers of hot cars.
"Did you know that on average, 38 children die in a hot car every year? 1 death has already occurred in 2021. Let’s spread awareness and save lives!"
"Did you know that heat is the number 1 weather related killer? On average 134 die each year due to heat."
