ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis County Police Officers and U.S. Marshals were in a standoff near Lafayette Park with a wanted suspect Tuesday morning.

St. Louis City Police say the incident began when US Marshalls tried to arrest Robert Smith, and he returned fire. Police say Smith only fired a single shot at officers and nobody was hurt.

Smith locked himself inside a house on the 2300 block of Albion Place.

SWAT was called in to assist in the situation, spending hours trying to get Smith to communicate with them over the phone, before finally Smith made his way out and surrendered to police.

KMOX's Sean Malone spoke to NaKesha Smith, a neighbor to Robert Smith.

NaKesha Smith says she was shocked to learn Smith was the one in a standoff with law enforcement, describing him as very kind and helpful individual.

"He always looked out for me and my daughter," said NaKesha Smith. "He always speaks everytime we see him. He would take out my trash if he saw go to the dumpster."

The situation caused parts of Jefferson Avenue from Park to Lafayette to closed.
