A new poll suggests that support is growing for legalized recreational marijuana in Missouri. In the FOX 2 - Emerson College poll, 48% of potential voters backed the November ballot measure. 35% opposed, and 17% were undecided.
But the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys issued a statement in opposition this week. The group's Eric Zahnd told FOX there are red flags out of Colorado.
"We've seen tremendous increases in the number of fatalities from marijuana-induced driving, we've seen children show up in emergency rooms in unprecedented numbers having mistakenly ingested marijuana edibles," Zahnd said.
The American Bar Association reports that it's hard to confirm if legal weed has led to an increase in traffic deaths, because many jurisdictions don't have much historical data on the matter. While traffic fatalities due to marijuana have increased in Colorado, it's not clear if that's directly tied to legalizing the drug.
Supporters of the ballot measure say as voters learn more about the benefits of legalized pot, they'll support it at the ballot box.
The amendment would also expunge the convictions of some non-violent drug offenders.
