JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KMOX) - An effort is underway in the Missouri legislature, to have Attorney General Eric Schmitt's office pay the attorney fees for the school districts he's suing over their mask mandates.
Minority Leader Crystal Quade of Springfield has filed a bill in the House mirroring the one pre-filed in the Senate in December by Affton Democrat Doug Beck.

Beck says it would require the Attorney General pay the fees in mask mandate suits he loses -- out of his budget -- so school districts don't have to take it out of their classrooms. "It's not like they have an extra fund for all these legal fees, whereas the Attorney General can use another fund, almost an unlimited fund to go after a school district. This way we would be impacting his office like he's impacting our kids."
Beck admits that getting the bills through the heavily Republican legislature will be an uphill battle.
The suits filed by the Attorney General's office argue school districts have no authority to impose public health orders for children.
