ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - Police are warning registered sex offenders in St. Charles County about scammers looking to exploit them by posing as cops.
Police say they are calling offenders and threatening them with jail time if bogus fines are not paid for fake warrants, suspected noncompliance and other delinquent fines. They're request financial information or numbers on the back of gift cards, police say.
Ironically, the warning from police has some people on social media actually thankful for the scammers. One commenter said "Doin the lords work," and another said "First time I've ever rooted for the scammers."
"As a reminder, 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆," Police stated. "Additionally, gift cards are not an acceptable form of payment for any legal fines. Victims of this scam should notify police. Registered offenders who have concerns about their compliance are asked to contact the Sex Offender Compliance & Management Unit at 636-949-3000."
