ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Longtime reporter Roche Madden announces his retirement from KTVI-FOX2 News. He shared with "St. Louis Talks" a couple of his most memorable stories including the time in 1989 when he was sent to the White House to cover former St. Louis County Executive Gene McNary who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to serve as Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
"I got on the plane and Jack Buck was in first class," Madden explained. "I called my station (back in St. Louis) and said, Jack Buck is going to the White House. They said, skip Gene McNary and go to the White House."
After getting security clearance, Madden had to go to the restroom and was told it was in the basement.
After using the bathroom, Madden used the payphone to call his wife collect.
"After my wife accepts the charges, she says, 'What's wrong?' I said, 'Guess what? I just peed in the White House.' She said, 'You called me collect it to tell me you peed the White House?'" Madden explained. "And I said, 'Have you peed in the White House?'"
Madden's last day at KTVI is July 1. He and his wife plan to move to the Washington DC area to be closer to his daughters.
