CENTRAL WEST END (KMOX) - A St. Louis alderman's plan to reduce the number of lanes on Lindell Boulevard is pitting some residents of exclusive neighborhoods against each other.
Alderman Heather Navarro is pushing to make the section of Lindell that touches the north end of Forest Park a two-lane road, instead of four as it is now. She also wants to add extra street parking and bike lanes. She says the current setup encourages speeding.
“Lindell is a street that serves the park," she said according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It wasn’t designed to be a commuter route.”
The plan comes as the city is being sued by some trustees of subdivisions along Lindell. They claim a 100-year-old agreement that was signed after the 1904 World’s Fair required their neighborhood be protected from “heavy hauling” and “business traffic.” The suit says the land just north of Forest Park was to be used “exclusively for park purposes.”
Attorneys representing the residents along Lindell say the city must give the land back to the trustees now.
Other residents in the area don't want any changes to be made. Their worries are that traffic will become a "nightmare" outside their homes at peak travel times.
Navarro's plan would cost about $300,000 from her ward's capital budget.
