Early this year, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt announced that he wouldn’t seek reelection. Now slated to be succeeded by Eric Schmitt, Blunt joined KMOX to talk about what his plans are for retirement, and took a look back at his career.

Blunt said things have changed a lot since he first took office as Secretary of State in 1984 — especially Missouri’s politics.

“I think the politics of Washington have changed a lot, too — there was a lot more emphasis, and frankly, a lot more reporting on what you got done in Congress, rather than how mad you were about whatever you were mad about that day,” Blunt said. “And I think that's unfortunate. We're also seeing now way too much power sort of getting into the offices of the four leaders in the Congress.”

However, Blunt said he is optimistic about the future, especially with the passage of five bipartisan bills during COVID.

“I think we have lots to be thankful for right now this time of year, but also lots of opportunities that are there,” he said. “Missouri and America both have real significant opportunities moving forward economically and for the better of our country and our families.”

Blunt touched on the border crisis, which he spoke about on the Senate floor on Tuesday. He said he’s supportive of finding a way to keep kids here who haven’t gotten into some kind of serious trouble.

“We should want the so-called Dreamers to stay here,” he said. “Demographics matter to a country — young, vigorous, people who are proud of the country they grew up in are important for us to have.”

Blunt talked more about immigration, Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 committee, advice for future members of Congress, and more. Listen to his interview on Total Information AM:
